Age- and sex-related changes in facet orientation and tropism in lower lumbar spine: An MRI study of 600 patients
European Spine Journal Mar 22, 2019
Degulmadi D, et al. - Between June 2015 and December 2017, investigators examined 600 magnetic resonance imaging scans of cases with low back pain to estimate the age- and sex-related variations in facet orientation and facet tropism in the lower lumbar spine. They categorized the cases into 4 groups viz, group A (< 30 years), group B (31–45 years), group C (46–60 years) and group D (> 60 years). They observed an increase in average facet angle from L3–4 to L5–S1 level in all groups regardless of age and sex. They also found a positive relationship between age and sagittal facet orientation at all levels across all groups. Significant relation of facet angle sagittalization in males at L5–S1 level and in females at L4–5 levels were also noted.
