Age and sex differences in ischemic stroke treatment in a nationwide analysis of 1.11 million hospitalized cases
Stroke Oct 27, 2019
Weber R, Krogias C, Eyding J, et al. - Via the nationwide administrative database of the German Federal Statistical Office, experts examined access to stroke unit treatment, intravenous thrombolysis (IVT), mechanical thrombectomy (MT), and in-hospital mortality. From 2013 to 2017, a total of 1,112,570 individuals were hospitalized for first or recurrent ischemic stroke. Individuals ≥ 80 years of age got significantly less frequent treatments even when the variation became smaller over time. A significantly greater likelihood and lower in-hospital mortality was noted in men of all age groups who were receiving stroke unit treatment. No difference was seen in the use of IVT, whereas women of all ages were treated more frequently with MT. Thus, in both elderly people and women of all ages, access to stroke unit treatment has to be raised. While there was no gender variation in IVT use, in women with ischemic stroke, it is significant to additionally examine the significantly greater frequency of MT despite age.
