Age and recurrent stroke are related to the severity of white matter hyperintensities in lacunar infarction patients with diabetes
Clinical Interventions in Aging Dec 13, 2018
Yu L, et al. - In lacunar infarction patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), researchers studied the association of the severity of white matter hyperintensities (WMH) and vascular risk factors (hypertension, hyperlipidemia, history of coronary artery atherosclerosis disease, history of stroke, smoking). For this investigation, consecutive lacunar infarction patients with T2DM (n=327) were enlisted. The patients with severe paraventricular WMH (P-WMH) had higher age, a higher proportion of hypertension and stroke vs the patients with mild P-WMH. In patients with mild P-WMH, levels of TG, LDL, and HbA1c were significantly higher. The patients with severe deep WMH (D-WMH) had higher age and hyperhomocysteinemia (HCY) level, a higher proportion of hyperlipidemia, and stroke vs the patients with mild D-WMH. According to this cross-sectional study, the severity of P-WMH and D-WMH in lacunar infarction patients with T2DM was linked to age and recurrent strokes.
