Aerosolized corticosteroids to prevent postoperative sore throat in adults: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Acta Anaesthesiologica Scandinavica Feb 28, 2019
Kuriyama A, et al. - Researchers analyzed evidence from 9 randomized controlled trials involving 984 patients, to evaluate the efficacy and safety of aerosolized corticosteroids in the prevention of postoperative sore throat in adults undergoing tracheal intubation for surgery. They analyzed eligible studies published from inception to 13 May 2018 in Medline, EMBASE, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials. These studies also included comparisons either with non-analgesic or analgesic controls, with focus on the incidence and severity of sore throat 24 hours postoperatively and adverse events (primary outcomes). Findings highlighted the possible superior efficacy of aerosolized corticosteroids in preventing postoperative sore throat, compared with non-analgesic methods, but the evidence is still limited and not definitive.
