Aerobic, resistance or combined training: A systematic review and meta-analysis of exercise to reduce cardiovascular risk in adults with metabolic syndrome
Atherosclerosis May 09, 2018
Wewege M, et al. - Researchers assessed aerobic, resistance, and combined (aerobic + resistance) exercise for their impact on cardiovascular risk factors in patients with metabolic syndrome (MetS) without diabetes using eight electronic databases. They analyzed data from relevant randomized controlled trials >4 weeks in duration via a random effects model to get meta-analyses on MetS criteria, cardiorespiratory fitness and cardiovascular risk factors. With aerobic exercise, significant improvement was seen in waist circumference (-3.4 cm), fasting glucose (-0.15 mmol/L), high-density cholesterol (0.05 mmol/L, triglycerides -0.29 mmol/L), diastolic blood pressure (-1.6 mmHg), and cardiorespiratory fitness (4.2 ml/kg/min), among other outcomes. No significant impact was seen with resistance exercise, perhaps due to inadequate data. In these subjects, widespread benefits of aerobic exercise were seen when undertaken as per current guidelines.
