Adverse pregnancy outcomes and risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease in postmenopausal women

JAMA Cardiology Dec 19, 2020

Søndergaard MM, Hlatky MA, Stefanick ML, et al. - Researchers used a large multiethnic cohort of postmenopausal women (Women’s Health Initiative) to determine if adverse pregnancy outcomes (APOs) were related to elevated atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) risk independently of traditional risk factors. In females who reported an APO, a more frequent development of ASCVD was noted, vs women without APOs. A significant association of each APO (assessed separately) with ASCVD was identified, and gestational diabetes, hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, low birth weight, and preterm delivery continued to be significant following adjustment for traditional ASCVD risk factors. Findings of this analysis of a large multiethnic cohort of women revealed an independent correlation of both hypertensive disorders of pregnancy and of low birth weight with ASCVD following adjustment for risk factors as well as other APOs.
