Adverse pregnancy and neonatal outcomes associated with Neisseria gonorrhoeae: Systematic review and meta-analysis
Sexually Transmitted Infections Jan 15, 2021
Vallely LM, Egli-Gany D, Wand H, et al. - Researchers intended to determine if there is an associations between Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG) infection during pregnancy and the risk of preterm birth, spontaneous abortion, premature rupture of membranes, perinatal mortality, low birth weight and ophthalmia neonatorum. They searched for studies published between 1948 and January 14, 2020, in Medline, EMBASE, the Cochrane Library and Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature. Studies were involved if they reported NG testing during pregnancy and compared pregnancy, perinatal and/or neonatal outcomes between women with and without NG. Two thousand five hundred ninety-three records were reported and 30 were included in meta-analyses. In low-income and middle-income countries, NG was more strongly correlated with preterm birth than in high-income countries. A number of adverse pregnancy and newborn outcomes are associated with NG. Further studies should be undertaken to evaluate the role of NG in various perinatal mortality outcomes, as measures that minimize mortality in low-income and middle-income countries would have the greatest effect on reducing the burden of disease.
