Adverse events from emergency physician pediatric extremity radiograph interpretations: A prospective cohort study
Academic Emergency Medicine Nov 16, 2019
Al-Sani F, Prasad S, Panwar J, et al. - Researchers sought to determine the frequency of discordance of emergency physician pediatric musculoskeletal radiograph interpretations to that of a radiologist; further, they investigated adverse event (AE) frequency related to this discordance and the variables that are independently associated with this outcome. In an urban, tertiary care children's emergency department (ED), ED physicians documented radiograph interpretation of 2,302 children with an extremity injury was compared with a radiology reference standard. Of these, 180 (7.8%) ED physician discordant interpretations led to an AE. The AEs were primarily correlated with an increase in subsequent healthcare visits. The risk factor for ED physician discordant interpretations was a low clinical suspicion for a fracture or injury located in the joint.
