Adverse childhood experiences and youth cigarette use in 2013 and 2016: Emerging disparities in the context of declining smoking rates
Nicotine & Tobacco Research Aug 31, 2018
Parks MJ, et al. - In the context of declining smoking rates, individuals who still smoke were examined. Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and cigarette use in 2013 and 2016 were examined using the Minnesota Student Survey (MSS). In addition, researchers ascertained the changes in the use rates, the relation of ACEs to cigarette use, and the degree to which youth with ACEs comprise the current smoking population. From 2013 to 2016, all Minnesota youth showed declination in the cigarette use, however youth with no ACEs showed a faster decline than youth with ACEs. Hence, youth with ACEs now comprise the increasingly high percentage of youth smokers.
