Adverse childhood experiences and the onset of chronic disease in young adulthood
Preventive Medicine Mar 25, 2019
Sonu S, et al. - Using data from the 2011–2012 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), researchers assessed the link between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs)-including physical, emotional, and sexual abuse; substance use, mental illness or incarceration of a household member; domestic violence, and parental separation- and early-onset chronic conditions (cardiovascular disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cancer, depression, diabetes, and prediabetes). This is the first inquiry into the patterns of the link between ACEs and adult health disaggregated by age. Youngest respondents (19%) exhibited the highest prevalence of ≥4 ACEs. Except for cancer in older adults, a dose-response gradient was observed between ACE scores and outcomes. An increased risk of early-onset chronic disease was observed in young adults with high ACE scores.
