Adverse childhood experiences among gynecology patients with chronic pelvic pain
Obstetrics and Gynecology Nov 05, 2019
Krantz TE, Andrews N, Petersen TR, et al. - In this case-control study, researchers investigated adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) in women with chronic pelvic pain (n = 60) vs a control group of women without chronic pelvic pain (n = 60). In addition, they described the occurrence of specific ACEs in women with chronic pelvic pain. They assessed how the history of ACEs, traumatic events occurring during childhood as defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, are correlated with chronic pelvic pain. Observatiosn revealed a greater than threefold odds of having a history of childhood abuse and having witnessed domestic violence during childhood among chronic pelvic pain participants vs the control group. They identified increased numbers of ACEs among women with chronic pelvic pain; 53% of these women had four or more ACEs, crossing a threshold that others have found to predict poor overall health outcomes.
