Adverse childhood events and risk of diabetes onset in the 1979 National Longitudinal Survey of Youth cohort
BMC Public Health Aug 01, 2019
Lown EA, Lui CK, Karriker-Jaffe K, et al. - Researchers investigated how the risk of diabetes onset is influenced by adverse childhood experiences (ACE). They used longitudinal data from a representative US population sample observed over 30 years from 1982 to 2012 waves of the 1979 National Longitudinal Survey of Youth. In nearly 10% of participants, presence of type 2 diabetes mellitus was identified. Among women, diabetes onset was predicted by ACE but a reduction of this link was reported after controlling for body mass index (BMI). Among women with a history of ACE, being overweight or obese was significantly more common, which implies BMI could be on the pathway from ACE to diabetes onset for women. There was no significant association between ACE and diabetes onset in men.
