Adverse child experiences increase the odds of obesity in early adolescence: A population-based prospective cohort study
Pediatric Research May 18, 2019
Gardner R, et al. - Via analyzing data from 6,942 adolescents followed between 9 and 13 years of age in the Growing Up in Ireland cohort study, researchers assessed if adverse childhood experiences correlated with weight gain and obesity risk. More than 75% of these adolescents had an adverse experience; 17% had an Adverse Childhood Experience (ACE) -specific experience and before the age of 9 years. For both incident overweight/obesity and weight gain, a significant interaction was observed between income and adverse childhood experiences. Overall, the authors concluded that adverse experiences of childhood and low income interact and independently predict early adolescence risk of obesity.
