Advantages of the combination of conscious sedation epidural anesthesia under fluoroscopy guidance in lumbar spine surgery
Journal of Pain Research Jan 25, 2020
Kang SY, Kashlan ON, Singh R, et al. - Given an increase in life expectancy throughout the world and the subsequent increase in the prevalence of degenerative spinal pathology and surgery to treat it, there is a necessity for the safer anesthetic methods applicable to unhealthy, elderly patients undergoing spinal surgery. Researchers here reported their experience with employing fluoroscopy-guided epidural anesthesia in combination with conscious sedation in spinal surgery. One hundred eleven patients (mean age: 60 years) received fluoroscopy-guided epidural anesthesia for lumbar surgery from February to September 2018 at their institution. Postoperative pain decreased in all patients with no significant differences based on age or ASA class. Outcomes support utilizing conscious sedation in conjunction with fluoroscopy-guided epidural anesthesia as safe and feasible in the lumbar spinal surgery.
