Advancing age and comorbidity in a United States insured population-based cohort of patients with chronic hepatitis B
Hepatology Sep 07, 2018
Nguyen MH, et al. - This study was undertaken to determine the prevalence and incidence of non-liver comorbidities in chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients over time and the predictors of select comorbidities in CHB patients using insurance claims databases. Participants in the study were adults with continuous coverage (Commercial/Medicare or Medicaid) 6 months prior to and after the first CHB diagnosis and matched non-CHB patients. The findings from the present study suggested that insured CHB patients were older with more comorbidities and experienced higher incidence and prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and osteoporosis/fracture [OF] than controls. Female, alcohol use and viral coinfection were strongest predictors for OF. Diabetes [DM], hypertension [HTN] and cardiovascular disease [CVD] were strongest predictors for CKD.
