Advanced MR diffusion imaging and chemotherapy-related changes in cerebral white matter microstructure of survivors of childhood bone and soft tissue sarcoma?
Human Brain Mapping Apr 28, 2018
Sleurs C, et al. - Given that previous adult studies have inferred that white matter (WM) microstructural changes may impact cognitive impairment, researchers examined WM microstructure in childhood bone and soft tissue sarcoma. By combining typical and advanced voxel-based models (diffusion tensor model and NODDI model, respectively), as well as recently developed fixel-based models (for estimations of intra-voxel differences, apparent fiber density and fiber cross-section), researchers compared WM in childhood bone and soft tissue sarcoma survivors and matched controls. In the survivors, altered WM structure was found. Global chemotherapy-related changes were identified, with particular vulnerability seen in centrally located WM bundles. A potential recovery of such differences with treatment was indicated.
