Adult mental health outcomes of adolescent depression: A systematic review
Depression and Anxiety Jun 18, 2018
Johnson D, et al. - The literature on the association between adolescent depression (age 10–19) and adult anxiety and depressive disorders as well as suicidality was systematically reviewed. Analyzing the identified 20 articles representing 15 unique cohorts suggest that adolescent depression increases the risk for developing subsequent depression later in life. Findings from the articles consistently indicated that adolescent depression increases the risk for anxiety disorders in adulthood. However, researchers noted mixed evidence on whether or not a significant association existed between adolescent depression and suicidality in adulthood. Long-term burden of disease could be reduced via early intervention in adolescent depression.
