Adrenal steroids in female hypothyroid neonates: Unraveling an association between thyroid hormones & adrenal remodeling
Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism Mar 06, 2019
Galanou S, et al. - Researchers ascertained if thyroid hormones (TH) during the neonatal period influences adrenal steroid profiles and adrenal remodeling. For this investigation, they compared the adrenal steroid profile of a naturally occurring prototype, female neonates with severe congenital hypothyroidism (CH, n=22, upon diagnosis of CH), with that of euthyroid neonates (n=20). A more active adrenal fetal zone than controls suggests the hormonal profile of female neonates with severe CH. According to findings, female neonates with severe CH hormonal profile suggest a more active adrenal fetal zone than controls. These data associate TH indirectly with the human process of adrenal remodeling and maturation. Overall, the investigators suggested that severe hypothyroidism decelerates the involution of the adrenal fetal zone that normally occurs postnatally.
