Adoption of digital breast tomosynthesis in clinical practice
JAMA Internal Medicine Sep 06, 2019
Richman IB, Hoag JR, Xu X, et al. - In this investigation, researchers characterized the adoption of digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) for breast cancer screening in a large privately insured population, identified regional patterns of adoption, and assessed regional-level features correlated with that adoption as compared with digital mammography. In comparison to two-dimensional mammography, the use of DBT had some significant trade-offs such as higher costs and higher radiation doses with some machines. Furthermore, most studies of DBT were retrospective and could not assess its long-term health results. Although not specifically approved DBT for routine breast cancer screening by the US Preventive Services Task Force and the American Cancer Society, citing inadequate proof, the American College of Radiology promotes its use.
