Adolescent Trichomonas vaginalis in a high-burdened region of the southern United States
Sexually Transmitted Diseases Jun 19, 2020
Nolan MS, Lynn MK, Lacroix R, et al. - The clinical management and risk factors for Trichomonas vaginalis–positive adolescents in upstate South Carolina were evaluated. Via generating an Epic electronic medical record report, researchers identified that 789 male and female adolescents had physician-ordered T. vaginalis tests from February 2016 to December 2017 within the Prisma Health Upstate system. A documented result was identified for 44% of these adolescents; Of these, 13% were T. vaginalis positive. Findings here indicated a disproportionally high burden of T. vaginalis infection, with an alarmingly high rate of triple infections, among a population of suspected high-risk adolescents. They suggest the necessity to determine infection prevalence, develop pediatrician-focused education campaigns, and identify potentially modifiable risk factors for these high-risk patients.
