Adolescence and endometriosis: Symptoms, ultrasound signs and early diagnosis
Fertility and Sterility Oct 11, 2020
Martire FG, Lazzeri L, Conway F, et al. - Researchers conducted a retrospective observational study evaluating the ultrasonographic presence of different forms of endometriosis and the correlated clinical symptoms in adolescent women. From January 2014 to June 2019, two-dimensional, three-dimensional, and power Doppler ultrasound (US) pelvic examination (transvaginal or transrectal in pre–sexually active adolescents) were performed on 270 women aged 12–20 years referred to the gynecologic ultrasound unit. One hundred forty seven patients (54.4%) patients reported dysmenorrhea and 76 (28.1%) reported heavy menstrual bleeding. There were 36 (13.3%) cases with at least one ultrasound feature of endometriosis. Observations revealed statistically significantly higher rates of dysmenorrhea, dyspareunia and heavy menstrual bleeding in adolescents with endometriosis ultrasound signs vs those without. The detection rate of pelvic endometriosis at ultrasound raised to 20% among patients with dysmenorrhea. Based on these observations, they emphasize professionals involved with teens to be aware of the clinical presentation of endometriosis to decrease the delay between the onset of symptoms and the diagnosis, referring these young women to dedicated centers.
