Administration of tranexamic acid improves long-term outcomes in total knee arthroplasty

Journal of Arthroplasty Mar 10, 2020

Drain N, Gobao V, Bertolini D, et al. - This study was performed to analyze whether Tranexamic acid (TXA) was correlated with a reduced rate of periprosthetic joint infection (PJI), decreased rate of outcomes associated with PJI, and whether there were differences in rates of adverse events. Researchers designed a multicenter cohort study involving a total of 23,421 TKA compared with 4,423 individuals receiving TXA to 18,998 individuals not receiving TXA. The primary endpoint included PJI within two years of TKA. The revision surgery, irrigation and debridement, transfusion, and length of stay were considered secondary endpoints. Administration of TXA in TKA occurred at a lowered rate of PJI and overall revision surgery. There was no difference in thromboembolic events. In TKA, the use of TXA is safe and enhances results.
