Adjuvant radiotherapy versus observation following lumpectomy in ductal carcinoma in-situ: A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials
The Breast Journal Aug 26, 2017
Garg PK et al. – This meta–analysis of 4 randomized controlled trials (N = 3680) discussed the role of adjuvant radiotherapy (RT) following lumpectomy for ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS). Of the 3680 patients, 1710 received adjuvant RT following lumpectomy, whereas 1970 patients did not receive any RT. Patients who received RT had almost half of risk of ipsilateral breast recurrence and regional recurrence compared to those who did not receive adjuvant treatment. An absolute risk reduction of 15% was reported for ipsilateral breast recurrences in adjuvant RT–treated patients. No significant difference was reported in distant recurrence, contralateral breast events, and overall mortality. Despite an absence of overall mortality, the present meta–analysis confirms that addition of postoperative RT to lumpectomy decreases the risk of ipsilateral breast and regional recurrences by almost half.
