Adjuvant radiation therapy improves patient survival in early-stage Merkel cell carcinoma: A 15-year single-institution study
The Laryngoscope Apr 13, 2018
Han AY, et al. - Researchers compared the overall survival (OS) of Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) patients who received postoperative radiation therapy (RT) with those who received surgery alone. They reviewed the cases of MCC between 2001 and 2016 at the University of California, Los Angeles Health System. Poor prognosis for survival especially in elderly patients was seen in MCC, an aggressive tumor. Findings suggested that the inclusion of RT was not found to be a determinant. Nonetheless, postoperative adjuvant RT was seen to be related to significantly improved OS when restricting the analysis to early-stage MCC (stages I and II).
