Adiposity is a confounding factor which largely explains the association of serum vitamin D concentrations with C-reactive protein, leptin and adiponectin

Rafiq R, El Haddaoui H, de Mutsert R, et al. - Since there is a lack of knowledge about the role of adiposity in the link between vitamin D and inflammation, so researchers examined the link of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) with C-reactive protein (CRP), leptin and adiponectin and the role of adiposity in this association in this cross-sectional study of The Netherlands Epidemiology of Obesity Study, which represents a population-based cohort investigation among men and women aged 45 to 65 years. There were 6,287 participants overall, among those, 21% were found to be vitamin D deficient (serum 25(OH)D < 50 nmol/L). Findings revealed that the negative link of serum 25(OH)D with the pro-inflammatory CRP and leptin, and the positive link with the anti-inflammatory adiponectin, were largely explained by measures of adiposity.
