Adiposity in middle and old age and risk of death from dementia: 40-year follow-up of 19,000 men in the Whitehall study
Age and Aging Jan 13, 2019
Allen AN, et al. - In this prospective study, researchers assessed 19,019 middle-aged central government employees in London, United Kingdom, from 1967 to 1970, and again in 1997, to determine the association of adiposity in middle and old age with the risk of death from dementia. After adjusting for age, smoking habits, employment grade, and marital status, the investigators measured the body weight and body mass index (BMI) of participants. They recorded death due to dementia for 320 participants. They found a stronger inverse association of body weight in old age with deaths due to dementia. They observed no association of height and BMI to the risk of dementia, raising the question on suggestions of obesity’s protective effects on dementia-related death.
