Adiposity and breast cancer risk in postmenopausal women: Results from the UK Biobank prospective cohort
International Journal of Cancer Apr 29, 2018
Guo W, et al. - With body size being an important modifiable risk factor for postmenopausal breast cancer, researchers investigated if direct measures of fat mass are better indicators of risk than anthropometric measures, or if central adiposity contributes to risk beyond overall adiposity. Associations between per SD increase in BMI and body fat mass with breast cancer risk were of similar scale, which indicates that compared to anthropometric measures, impedance measures of fat were not substantially better indicators of risk. A reduction was noted in the links between anthropometric measures of central adiposity and breast cancer risk, after adjusting for body fat mass. Overall, in women who had been postmenopausal for 12 or more years, a greater level of risk was observed across all measures of adiposity.
