Adipokine interactions promote the pathogenesis of systemic lupus erythematosus

Cytokine Aug 13, 2018

Chougule D, et al. - Researchers investigated the role of adipokine interactions in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) disease pathogenesis in this case-control study involving 60 newly diagnosed treatment naïve SLE patients fulfilling the ACR (American College of Rheumatology) criteria and 40 age-sex matched healthy subjects. They found that involvement of adipokines in disease pathogenesis of SLE was suggested by the observed levels of adipokines and related clinical manifestations. With the presence of renal manifestations, associated elevated adiponectin, adipsin and resistin levels as well as reduced leptin levels were observed. Additionally, regulatory impact of adipokines (adiponectin and leptin) on disease pathogenesis may be suggested by SLE disease activity and complement components.
