Adherence to the Mediterranean diet and lymphoma risk in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition
International Journal of Cancer Feb 11, 2019
Solans M, et al. - In the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) study, researchers assessed the risk of lymphoma and its subtypes in relation to adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MD) among 476,160 participants who were recruited from 10 European countries between 1991 and 2001. By means of the adapted relative MD (arMED) score excluding alcohol, they assessed adherence to the MD. They also used Cox proportional hazards regression models adjusting for potential confounders. They identified 3,136 lymphomas (135 Hodgkin lymphoma [HL], 2,606 non-HL, and 395 lymphoma not otherwise specified) during an average follow-up of 13.9 years. Overall, the investigators noted an inverse association between an increasing arMED score and the risk of overall lymphoma in EPIC, but not by subtypes.
