Adherence to postpartum diabetes mellitus screening, do associated pregnancy complications make a difference?
Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice Feb 05, 2020
Rotem R, Salem-Yaniv S, Rahat HS, et al. - Researchers performed this retrospective cohort study to examine the effect of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) complications (ie, polyhydramnios, macrosomia, shoulder dystocia or cesarean section) on compliance with postpartum diabetes screening. This research was carried out between 2016-2017 to compare screening rates of women with and without GDM-related complications delivered at the Soroka University Medical Center. Participants in the study were 164 women. The recommended screening test was a 2-hour 75 g oral glucose tolerance test, which was taken 6-12 weeks after delivery. The study group comprised 82 women with GDM associated complications and the comparison group comprised 82 women with GDM but without complications. No disparity in neonatal outcomes was noted. Findings suggested that women with GDM related complications had a higher rate of compliance with the recommendations for postpartum DM screening. This difference, though, did not reach statistical significance in the current study.
