Adherence to postpartum diabetes mellitus screening, do associated pregnancy complications make a difference?
Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice Dec 05, 2019
Rotem R, Salem-Yaniv S, Rahat HS, et al. - In this retrospective cohort study involving 164 women, researchers examined the effect of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) complications (ie, polyhydramnios, macrosomia, shoulder dystocia or cesarean section) on compliance with postpartum diabetes screening. This investigation was conducted between 2016-2017 to compare screening rates of women with and without GDM-related complications delivered at the Soroka University Medical Center. The recommended screening test was a 2-hour 75 g oral glucose tolerance test, which was taken 6-12 weeks after delivery. The study group comprised 82 women with GDM associated complications and the comparison group comprised 82 women with GDM but without complications. Findings suggested that women with complications associated with GDM had a higher rate of compliance with recommendations for postpartum DM screening. Nevertheless, this disparity has not achieved statistical significance in the current study. No disparity in neonatal outcomes was noted.
