Adherence to blood cholesterol treatment guidelines among physicians managing patients with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease
The American Journal of Cardiology Apr 28, 2019
Ramsaran E, et al. - Researchers assessed adherence to the 2013 ACC/AHA blood cholesterol guidelines among physicians treating patients with evidence of acute atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) via use of EMR and patient chart data from Reliant Medical Group (Worcester, MA, USA). They also investigated the reasons for observed treatment decisions. They found that physicians followed the ACC/AHA guidelines for treating < 50% of acute ASCVD patients. Among patients not treated according to guidelines, ~42% received a lower statin intensity than recommended. Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels that were stable or at goal was identified as the most common reason for treating with a statin intensity below the recommended intensity, as reported by 41.8% of physicians—despite ACC/AHA guidelines recommending specific statin intensities rather than specific LDL-C levels.
