Adenosquamous carcinoma of the uterine cervix: Impact of histology on clinical management
Cancer Management and Research Jun 25, 2021
Yordanov A, Kostov S, Slavchev S, et al. - In this retrospective study, all Bulgarian patients suffering from adenosquamous carcinoma (ASC) of the uterine cervix who were registered at the Bulgarian National Cancer Registry (BNCR) were analyzed to determine the epidemiology as well as their prognosis, and these patients’ characteristics as well as results were compared with those of patients, treated at a large specialized institution – the Department of Gynecologic Oncology, University Hospital in Pleven, Bulgaria. ASC incidence rate was estimated to be 3.2% of all cervical cancer (CC) registered in BNCR and 4.97% of all stage I patients, managed in the experts' department. For all patients with ASC tumors from the registry, the estimated 5-year overall survival (OS) rate was 50.5%. For the same period of time, 31 patients with T1 tumors and ASC histology underwent treatment in researchers' department, and 10 of them (32.2%) were found to have lymph node metastases, and 5-year OS in ASC group was observed to be 74.19%. Findings revealed that prognosis of cancer of the uterine cervix was influenced by the histological subtype which should be regarded as a poor prognostic feature rather than simply a descriptive characteristic, and also should be considered as an integral component of the decision-making in clinical management of cases.
