Addition of D-sorbitol improves the usability of ophthalmic viscosurgical devices
Clinical Ophthalmology Sep 28, 2019
Watanabe I, et al. - In this investigation, researchers assessed the impacts of D-sorbitoll, which is known to have hygroscopic and moisturizing effects, addition on changes in the extrusion force of ophthalmic viscosurgical devices (OVDs). OVD formulations; the mixtures of 3% hyaluronic acid and 4% chondroitin sulfate comprising 0%, 0.5%, or 1.0% D-sorbitol have been prepared. Findings suggested that due to OVD storage, adding D-sorbitol to the viscoelastic agent may suppress needle clogging. The extrusion force values of OVDs are presumed to be associated with OVD usability and operability during surgery. In order to select OVDs that suit their needs, it is important for surgeons to know these properties of OVDs thoroughly.
