Acute vascular ischemic events in patients with central retinal artery occlusion in the United States: A nationwide study 2003-2014
American Journal of Ophthalmology Apr 04, 2019
Mir TA, et al. - In this retrospective cross-sectional study, investigators estimated 17,117 central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) inpatient admissions to study acute vascular ischemic events in CRAO cases. They noted 12.9% and 3.7%, the incidence of in-hospital stroke and acute myocardial infarction (MI), respectively. They found an increasing trend in the incidence of stroke over the years ie, almost doubling in 2014 vs 2003 (15.3% vs 7.7%). They reported the combined risk of 19% of in-hospital stroke, transient ischemic attack, acute MI, or mortality. They observed the following positive predictors of in-hospital stroke: female gender, hypertension, carotid artery stenosis, aortic valve disease, smoking, and alcohol dependence or abuse.
