Acute respiratory distress syndrome in mechanically-ventilated patients with community-acquired pneumonia
European Respiratory Journal Mar 24, 2018
Cilloniz C, et al. - Researchers herein used the Berlin definition and assessed the incidence, characteristics, aetiology, risk factors and mortality of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) in ICU patients with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). It was noted that 29% of mechanically-ventilated patients developed ARDS as a complication of CAP, but ARDS was not found to be associated with the aetiology or mortality. Based on the baseline PaO2/FiO2, patients had mild, moderate, and severe ARDS, respectively. The most frequent pathogen was Streptococcus pneumoniae. Independent risk factors for ARDS included higher organ system dysfunction and previous antibiotic use.
