Acute respiratory compromise on hospital wards: Association between recent ICU discharge and outcome
Resuscitation Sep 14, 2019
Berg KM, et al. - Researchers sought to determine the association between prior ICU discharge and survival after an acute respiratory compromise (ARC) event. As per their hypothesis patients recently discharged from an ICU would experience a significant percentage of ARC events, would have worse outcomes than those without prior ICU stays, and would have a higher than expected post-ICU ARC frequency in correlation with weekend ICU discharge. Adult, index ARC events occurring on hospital wards were included employing the Get-With-The-Guidelines-Resuscitation ARC registry. They identified 11,800 ARCs; of these, 937 (8%) occurred within 2 calendar days and 1,010 (9%) > 2 calendar days after ICU discharge. In contrast to their hypothesis, outcomes revealed better odds for survival in correlation with discharge from an ICU within 2 calendar days relative to no prior ICU discharge or ICU discharge more than 2 days prior.
