Acute postoperative pain is associated with myocardial injury after noncardiac surgery
Anesthesia & Analgesia Aug 21, 2020
Turan A, Leung S, Bajracharya GR, et al. - Researchers undertook this retrospective cohort study to ascertain if time-weighted average pain scores over the initial 72 postoperative hours were related to myocardial injury following noncardiac surgery. Participants were adults who underwent routine postoperative troponin monitoring following noncardiac surgery under general, regional, or combined anesthesia. This analysis involved 2892 eligible patients, of those, 4.5% encountered myocardial injury within 72 hours post-surgery. Increased hazard of myocardial injury was reported in relation to higher time-weighted average pain scores. Overall, time-weighted average pain scores within 72 hours post-surgery were shown to be significantly related to myocardial injury in patients undergoing noncardiac surgery.
