Acute pancreatitis in end-stage renal disease patients in the USA: A nationwide, propensity score-matched analysis
European Journal of Gastroenterology & Hepatology Jul 16, 2019
Cheungpasitporn W, et al. - Researchers explored the connection between end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and outcomes and resource utilization of acute pancreatitis (AP) in this large nationwide study using inpatient USA database. To identify all hospitalized patients with a principal diagnosis of AP, the 2014 National Inpatient Sample database was used. To build a matched cohort of ESRD and non-ESRD patients, propensity score matching was performed. Of 382,595 patients with AP, 7380 patients with ESRD and 8050 patients with non-ESRD were created after propensity score matching. Patients with ESRD were more likely to have hypercalcemia or AP related to other/unspecified causes, while non-ESRD patients were more likely to have AP related to alcohol, gallstone, and hypertriglyceridemia. In comparison with non-ESRD patients, the findings show greater AP-related mortality and resource usage among ESRD patients. There were no differences in inpatient morbidity, imaging study use, and hospitalization procedures.
