Ren Y, et al. - In patients with acute otitis media (AOM) and associated complications, authors evaluated the pattern of presentation and emergency department (ED) utilization. AOM or mastoiditis commonly resulted in ED visits, however, this disease entity rarely caused complications. For assessing healthcare utilization trends, an in-depth analysis on a national level is useful. Patients with complicated AOM were older, insured by Medicare, and were more likely to be admitted vs patients with uncomplicated AOM.
