Cancer Medicine Apr 16, 2019
Kang E, et al. - In this retrospective cohort study, 67,986 cancer patients were analyzed to evaluate the association between acute kidney injury (AKI) and all-cause mortality. They noted the highest AKI incidence in hematologic malignancies, followed by urinary tract cancer, and hepatocellular carcinoma. They observed an association of male gender, older age, underlying diabetes and hypertension, lower serum albumin and plasma hemoglobin, more frequent radio-contrast exposure, the entrance of clinical trials, and receiving chemotherapy with AKI event. Even after adjustment, they reported AKI development as an independent risk factor for increased mortality in cancer cases with dose-responsive manner.
