Acute kidney injury and subsequent frailty status in survivors of critical illness: A secondary analysis
Critical Care Medicine Apr 20, 2018
Abdel-Kader K, et al. - In critical illness survivors, researchers assessed the association of acute kidney injury and frailty within a year of hospital discharge, using Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes stages and the Clinical Frailty Scale at 3 and 12 months following discharge. In this secondary analysis of a prospective cohort study conducted at medical/surgical ICU of a U.S. tertiary care medical center, including participants with respiratory failure and/or shock, it was shown that worse frailty status 3 and 12 months postdischarge was predicted by acute kidney injury in survivors of critical illness. These data highlight the need to understand the drivers of frailty to improve patient-centered outcomes.
