Acute kidney injury and mortality in pediatric Lassa fever vs question of access to dialysis
International Journal of Infectious Diseases Nov 18, 2020
Adetunji AE, Ayenale M, Akhigbe I, et al. - Researchers examined the prevalence of acute kidney injury (AKI) in hospitalized pediatric patients with Lassa fever (LF) as well as determined its influence on their outcome. Among 40 successive hospitalized children with PCR-confirmed LF assessed in this study, 16 (40%) children were diagnosed with AKI based on KDIGO criteria. This suggests a high prevalence of AKI in hospitalized pediatric patients with LF. Risk of both AKI and mortality was increased in correlation with clinical-laboratory biomarkers of severe infection. They observed a ≥ 3-fold increased risk of mortality in correlation with the presence of AKI in LF. Significantly improved outcome might be achieved in correlation with the availability of hemodialysis. Specialized care should be offered to children with hematuria plus proteinuria.
