Acute kidney injury after liver surgery: Does postoperative urine output correlate with postoperative serum creatinine?

HPB Aug 23, 2019

Joliat GR, et al. - Given that acute kidney injury (AKI) after hepatectomy occurs in almost 10% of cases, experts aspired to explore whether postoperative urine output (UO) associated with serum creatinine after hepatectomy. All consecutive hepatectomy patients (2010–2016) were evaluated. According to the defining criterion, AKI was subdivided into creatinine-based or oliguria-based AKI. AKI has been noted in 79 cases out of 285 patients. No connection between postoperative oliguria and postoperative serum creatinine increase was observed. Overall, the authors concluded that postoperative UO exhibited a poor relationship with postoperative serum creatinine both in all patients and AKI patients. Duration of surgery > 360 minutes seemed like the only independent predictor of postoperative serum creatinine increase.
