Acute hepatitis is a prominent presentation of the multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children: A single‐center report
Hepatology Oct 30, 2020
Cantor A, Miller J, Zachariah P, et al. - In view of how a newly identified multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS‐C) with severe acute respiratory syndrome, coronavirus‐2 (SARS‐CoV‐2) has changed the perception of illness severity in children, researchers sought to report the clinical and biochemical features of liver involvement and the comorbidities that present with hepatitis. In this retrospective cohort study of 44 patients with MIS‐C, observations revealed a common occurrence of hepatitis in children with MIS‐C (43%) and that it often correlates with a more severe presentation and persistent elevation of liver function tests. Significantly higher rates of shock at presentation, greater respiratory support requirement, and longer hospitalization times were seen in patients with hepatitis, as well as significantly higher levels of ferritin, interleukin‐6, troponin, and B‐type natriuretic peptide. Although all patients were discharged, persistent hepatitis was evident in > 50% up to 1 month after discharge.
