Acute gastroenteritis disease burden in infants with medical risk conditions in the Netherlands
The Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal Jan 08, 2021
van Dongen JAP, Rouers EDM, Schuurman R, et al. - Researchers here examined Infants with medical risk conditions in the Netherlands for acute gastroenteritis (AGE) incidence, severity, and virus prevalence in order to guide prevention programs. As part of the RIVAR-project recruiting infants with prematurity, low birth weight or severe congenital conditions in 13 hospitals, this prospective cohort-study included 631 infants during 9,125 person-months of observation. They identified 559 episodes in total. The mean rate of AGE incidence was 73.5 per 100 person-years (PY), but it increased with age. Findings corroborate substantial disease burden in view of the documented AGE incidence, severity and healthcare usage among medical risk infants. The primary pathogens detected were norovirus and rotavirus, and children with rotavirus infection most frequently experienced severe episodes. Based on findings, they emphasize prioritizing prevention of AGE in medical risk infants.
