Acute coronary syndrome and ischemic heart disease in pregnancy: Data from the EURObservational Research Programme‐European Society of Cardiology Registry of Pregnancy and Cardiac Disease
Journal of the American Heart Association Aug 11, 2020
Baris L, Hakeem A, Moe T, et al. - Women of child‐bearing age exhibit an increasing prevalence of ischemic heart disease (IHD). Researchers aimed at describing the pregnancy outcomes in these women. From the European Society of Cardiology‐EURObservational Research Programme ROPAC (Registry of Pregnancy and Cardiac Disease), a prospective registry incorporating data on pregnancies in women with heart disease from 138 centers in 53 countries, They obtained data of 117 pregnant women with preexistent and pregnancy‐onset IHD; of these women, 104 had preexisting IHD. Based on the outcomes, they conclude that women with IHD tolerate pregnancy relatively well. However, these women had a high rate of ischemic events and should therefore be considered moderate‐ to high‐risk. Outcomes indicated an association of ongoing cigarette smoking with acute coronary syndrome during pregnancy.
