Active involvement of family members in postoperative care after esophageal or pancreatic resection: A feasibility study
Surgery Jul 12, 2019
Schreuder AM, et al. - At the surgical ward of a University hospital in the Netherlands, researchers conducted a pragmatic feasibility trial investigating the feasibility of a program in which relatives participated in postoperative care. The intervention group (n = 20) comprised patients undergoing esophageal or pancreatic resection with a relative who was willing and able to participate. Usual postoperative care was provided in the control group (n = 20). Higher mobilization and higher adherence to breathing exercises, oral hygiene, and cognitive activities were evident among patients in the intervention group. No deterioration in Relatives’Care-Related Quality of Life instrument score over time was observed; 96% of relatives would recommend the program and 92% felt better prepared for discharge. They noted higher satisfaction with hospital admission among patients in the intervention group. These observations support the feasibility of the program. Patients, family, and healthcare professionals positively appreciated the program.
