Active Cushing syndrome patients have increased ectopic fat deposition and bone marrow fat content compared to cured patients and healthy subjects: A pilot 1H-MRS study
European Journal of Endocrinology Aug 27, 2018
Maurice F, et al. - A cross-sectional study was conducted to assess the impact of chronic hypercortisolism on bone marrow fat (BMF) by analyzing data of 17 active and 17 cured ACTH-dependent Cushing syndrome (CS) patients along with 17 controls (matched with the active group for age and sex). Using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, BMD was evaluated in patients. Compared to the controls, active CS patients had higher BMF content both in the femur and vertebrae. Findings revealed that BMF content was positively associated with age, fasting plasma glucose, HbA1c, triglycerides and visceral adipose tissue in the whole cohort. On the other hand, BMF content was negatively correlated with BMD values in the CS patients. Data reported that accumulation of BMF was induced by hypercortisolism. BMF reached values of controls in remission patients.
