Acid suppressants for managing gastro-oesophageal reflux and gastro-oesophageal reflux disease in infants: A national survey
Archives of Diseases in Childhood Mar 05, 2018
Bell JC, et al. - During this research, the diagnosis and management of reflux and gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) were comprehensively investigated in infants aged <1 year presenting to general practitioners (GPs). Findings revealed the possible occurrence of overprescribing of acid suppressants to infants. It was determined that acid-suppressant medicines were no better than placebo, possibly presenting with negative side effects. Nonetheless, guidelines were inconsistent. GPs and parents were advised to comprehend what was normal and what were the limitations of medical therapy. A greater knowledge was warranted of the influences on GP prescribing practices, of parents’ knowledge and attitudes and of the pressures on parents of infants with these conditions.
